TURKISH BATHS (HAMAM)

The first public baths were built in Sarajevo in 1462. Gazi Husrev-bey's hamam was built in the vicinity of the Cathedral in the fourth decade of the 16th century. Influenced by the tradition of Roman baths, the hamams were used as much for bathing as for socializing and entertainment. During the communist rule before the war this particular hamam was turned into an attractive cafe-restaurant and later into a casino. During the siege it was occasionally used as the city market, because it was protected from the shelling.
